Why not pure AI video generation

OpenChatCut chooses an editable timeline over one-shot black-box generation: results are previewable, tweakable, undoable, and export-ready.

Many products reduce video to “prompt → wait → final file.” That is great for concept sketches. It falls apart when you need to fix one line’s framing, duck BGM under a sentence, or move captions into a safe area. Black-box generation leaves nowhere to intervene.

OpenChatCut takes another path: agents edit a real timeline.

Two ways of working

Pure generation

  • Input: prompt, references, style notes
  • Output: a new video file
  • Strength: fast ideation
  • Cost: hard to revise details; expensive regenerations; opaque structure; weak fit for Premiere / FCP pipelines

Editable timeline (OpenChatCut)

  • Input: media + natural-language goals + optional external agents
  • Output: still a project—tracks, clips, captions, transitions, effects, history
  • Strength: inspectable steps, undo, manual polish, production export
  • Cost: you need media and basic editorial judgment; it is not “one-click cinema”

Why this matters more for agents

If an agent can only call generation APIs, it can only roll the dice again. If it can:

  1. Read the current project and selection
  2. Run deterministic edit actions (cuts, captions, ducking, transitions…)
  3. Write results back into the same project

Automation becomes a verifiable edit sequence, not an opaque render. OpenChatCut exposes those editing capabilities through built-in tools and MCP.

You keep control

  • Visible — changes show up on the timeline and in preview
  • Editable — drag, tweak parameters, restyle captions
  • Undoable — history remains
  • Portable — export masters, audio, captions, or project files

People and agents are not opposites: the agent drafts, you finish—or you stay fully manual.

When pure generation is better

  • You only need a 5-second mood clip with no real footage
  • Frame-level control does not matter
  • You are not handing off to a professional NLE or client review

Those cases fit generators well. OpenChatCut is for real media, iterative revision, and project-grade results.
